The Law of the Vital Few

 by Keith Wittenstein

"Coach Greg Glassman has said, "We work with a cast of about thirty exercises where about fifteen account for 80% of the workouts. The cast of characters that comprise our routines are so potent in increasing strength from head to toe that regular exposure to any of them nearly guarantees improvements in the others. Improve your deadlift, bench, and pull-ups and your squat, dips, and rope climb will come up. The neuro-endocrine response of the major lifts is so potent that they alone will increase your strength measured by any other exercise so that seemingly infrequent exposures to some exercises is not a certain disadvantage." (powerathletesmag)

When I read this it made me think of something else I had read. "The Pareto principle (also known as the 80-20 rule, the law of the vital few and the principle of factor sparsity) states that, for many events, 80% of the effects come from 20% of the causes. Business management thinker Joseph M. Juran suggested the principle and named it after Italian economist Vilfredo Pareto, who observed that 80% of income in Italy went to 20% of the population. It is a common rule of thumb in business; e.g., "80% of your sales comes from 20% of your clients." (wikipedia)

Operation Phoenix is a CrossFit Foundation initiative that will raise the necessary funds to equip the entire United States Marine Corps with functional fitness equipment to increase combat preparedness, reduce injury, and strengthen unit cohesion. This will be accomplished through non-profit sales, corporate sponsorships, and individual donations. Every penny raised will go directly to "America's Fighting Force," the USMC.

You Need Me

Jon Gilson has another article out. Read and enjoy!

"You are not wired for progress.  You seek an unending state of sameness, one where mental and physical stressors are nonexistent, and every day is just like the one before.  Routine is bliss for your underperforming ass.

It's not your fault.  Evolution left you ready to do battle with nature, and civilization gave you a neutron bomb.

You should be outside, spear in one hand and shield in the other, looking for something to kill.  Instead, you've got forty-five aisles of floor-to-ceiling shrink-wrapped grub, obtainable with nothing more than a plastic card and a smile..."

Better Than Yesterday

"In October of 2006, Greg Glassman gave me the most important lesson of my life.  It has nothing to do with barbells or pull-ups, sweat or pain.  In fact, it has very little to do with exercise at all.

His words, paraphrased and non-profound: The pursuit of excellence is rewarded.

Simple and axiomatic, it would be easy to dismiss this lesson as self-help drivel.  Yet put into action, it is the most powerful thing on the planet.  It's taken me two years to appreciate its potency, and ten short months to see its effects.

I've pared it down for my own use, coining a three-word phrase that reminds me that today is not just another day:  Better than yesterday.

Today is an opportunity to run faster than ever before.  To lift more weight.  To make better videos and write better articles.  To create better athletes.  To make every client happy.  To embrace the fact that yesterday's efforts were nothing more than an unsatisfactory attempt at an uncompromising ideal..."
